2 Things Everyone Should Know

The weather is so amazing here today, I jsut can't even begin to tell you. After spending far too much money at Hobby Lobby this morning, Mini #2 and I picked up his big brother and a friend from school and headed to the park for a picnic and some playtime outside in the fresh air. We were lucky enough to have the train go through the park twice while we were there to, so nanturally that is all the boys have been talking about.

At any rate, we're home now and in the spirit of Martha I thought I'd share a couple tips you guys might find as useful as I do. Just don't look for them in my "30 Things Everyone Should Know" book because unfortunately monogram momma doesn't exactly have the star powerhouse that is MSLO backing her to write such a helpful little handbook!

I don’t know about your puppy, but preppy puppy has the longest and fastest growing nails I’ve ever seen. We just can not keep up with them and the quick is so long that trimming her nails is fruitless. Not to mention she squirms and complains while huffing and puffing while we are trying ever so carefully to trim her nails without painfully cutting the quick. So at Christmastime, we sat her down and pulled out the Dremmel. Honestly it was so painless for preppy puppy and quick and easy for me that she didn’t even mind. For some reason, filing or sanding the nail and quick doesn’t make the quick bleed like cutting it does, so I was able to file them super super short without any pain whatsoever (to either of us!) that this. I will say though, it took Mr. Monogram holding her and just rubbing her belly while I filed and I recommend using the attachment thingie so you don’t have the entire weight of the dremmel in your hand. Check one more thing of your “To Do” list this weekend!

Most of us probably have some hooks installed in our closets to hang up those ever important monogrammed bags and pretty pink and green scarves, no? Well I for one was tired of all my bags, scarves, and misc little accessory items taking up my much needed closet shelf space or even, ending up on the floor (the horror!). So after taking a little cruise through the aisles of my local home improvement store (read: Lowes), I picked up 6 or 7 of the industrial hooks they sell for hanging bikes or ladders in your garage. Why did I choose these? You can see how these are long and deep hooks and I can get twice the amount of things on them than I normally would with other hooks, and my bags aren’t all squeezed together holding on to the hook for dear life. I love this idea!

Looking Ahead: I won't tell you why right now, but start gathering up all your old silk scarves and old ties of your significant other. Pick up some patterned silk fabric remnants or some inexpensive scarves and ties. I have a great project heading your way!

Organizing Your Home Office

In my quest to become everything that is Martha and enjoy all the “good things” in life, I have realized that in order to do that, I must be organized. After all, Martha is nothing if not organized. And quite honestly, there are lots of areas in my life that are perfectly organized. The mini monograms closets and drawers, their rooms, their toys, which I will touch on later, my photography, my dishes and china, my pantry, and even my Christmas ornaments. However, other areas that would get a “needs improvement” mark by them on a report card, would be my closet, our 3-car garage which we can currently only fit 1 car into (but truly since it’s my car so that one doesn’t really affect me all that much), and my projects (to be truthful, I would probably get a “deficiency” in those areas, but unless you attended my prep school, you’re not likely to know what that is). You would think I would be super organized with as many projects that I tend to take on so skimming the aisles at Target by myself on Friday night (this actually, was a treat for me believe it or not), I came upon the most adorable, must-have striped little 3 ring binder in the back to school section. And don’t act surprised that I was in the school supply section because if you know me, and you certainly should by now, you know that I love stationary and all things paper in general so I just HAD to check it out. So anyhow, back to the binder. It just sort of leapt into my cart and gave me the idea to use it as my project folder to keep my projects ideas organized. You see, when I see something on a show that I love and want to do, I write it down or go to the show’s website and print up the project. Or, if it’s in a magazine, I rip it out. It doesn’t even have to be a project, but even just a picture of things I deem as good things. But I’ll admit, I’ve got ripped pages stuck in books all over my computer area and it’s really a creativity crusher as far as I’m concerned. But again, I digress (I told you my ADD can be annoying). So after getting this adorable binder, I hopped on over the Office Max and also picked up some sheet protectors and the rest of my Friday night was spent organizing my project folder. It has surely given me a renewed burst of creativity and I found all these fantastic projects and ideas that I can’t wait to pass along!.

So I thought to myself, “while I’m at it, I might as well organize my dream house folder.” This is a folder that’s crammed with sketches and ripped out pages and ideas that I want to include in our next house. Moldings, doors, windows, cabinet finishes and kitchen layouts. And also inside my Dream House folder, I have a sketch of my “dream room.” It’s my sewing/crafting/wrapping room and in my dream world, Martha herself would even come help me design this room. And while I’m at it, let’s throw in an embroidery machine in there too. This little number should suit my needs just fine, thank you. Oh, and don’t forget the “NO MINI’S ALLOWED” outside the door (think No Shoes No Service! Or better, GUARD DOG ON DUTY!)

So, in my paper organization efforts, I realized that you too, may be interested in changing up your home office, sewing/crafting room, or just taking notes for some ideas. Well, even if you aren’t, I at least know that Chloe is. So although my little sketch is specifically for a creative-type room, my set-up can also serve just as easily for a multi-purpose home office as well. You can enlarge the photo to see what I've got planned. But let's get into specifics.

For my own use, I realized I need my crafting/wrapping/sewing room to be multi-purpose. So for that reason, I really like this modular office system by Pottery Barn. Not only is it available in several finish options, but you can literally create it to fit your own personal needs and design ideas. Who wouldn' t love that? So putting my system in the corner with two longer desk areas on eash side will allow me three chairs. One area on the far left to keep my sewing machine set up, my computer area in the center (for my blogging, no doubt!), and the desk area on the right for my photography. All the file cabinets underneath supporting my work top, will be used for fabric storage, craft supply storage, photography proofs, etc., and there will be loads of wall storage. But you'll also notice that I've put a center island in the room too. This is to be at countertop height for standing, but will also have a few stools around for the mini's and myself (when they are invited in, that is!) to do some art projects together. But ideally, this will be my wrapping station. Don't tell me wrapping large gifts on the kitchen table doesn't bother you like it does me, so that's what this area is for.

But look, I realize this system from PB or even from Ballards can be a little pricey and might not be in everyone's price range. But you can still have this design and look if it's something you want. Just hop over to Home Depot or Lowe's, put up a few unfinished wooden doors. Yep, Doors! By painting, staining or finishing to your desired color, attach some decorative moulding along each edge to finish it off, and buy some nice wooden file cabinets to match (or paint to match). Place the finished doors on top of your file cabinets in the same way the Pottery Barn system would assemble, but make sure you place the hole (from teh door handle) towards the back for lamp and computer cords. Easy as that.

Let's say you don't have a whole lot of room though, and only have space for, say, a cabinet. Then keep on reading, because I stumbled upon this brilliant craft cabinet. You can convert an unused armoire or even pick up a new one at your unfinished furniture store like this, and convert it into a fabulous craft cabinet where everything is self contained. Brilliant, right? I love how every square inch of this cabinet is utilized from the inside of the doors to the very top of the cabinet. This is very do-able too. All it takes is a little thinking and brainstorming about what your specific needs are. Really take time to walk through the aisles of your local home improvement store or office supply store, picking up cork and hanging file folders and magnetic strips that you install on the inside of the cabinet.

I totally understand if you're happy with your current desk/worktop set up, and you're just looking for storage options. If it’s possible, consider skirting your desk and filing area. You can either sew a gathered or pleated skirt (like a bed skirt for your desk area) and then back it with Velcro to put it around your area, or even just use the electric stapler to gather a skirt around and hide your desk area and dress it up a bit, then using the hot glue gun, apply some fringe or trim).I promise nobody will be the wiser if you hide the staples and you can count on me to keep your secret. If you’ve got a cluttered desktop, get everything off the top. Sort it by type of product or its use. Stationery in one pile, blank paper and notepads in another, pens and pencils in another and so on and so on. Find cute boxes in solid colors to match your room décor and put your items in those boxes. Or if you’d like you can always revisit the decoupage idea and decoupage a box or two with leftover fabric to match your room as well. Go to your local home improvement store and pick up some inexpensive shelving. But don’t just look in the “Shelving” aisle. Go to the back where the lumber and moulding and trim is sold, and they also have pre-cut unfinished hardwood shelves and decorative brackets. Pick up what you need and paint or stain then, hang them on the wall and use that to keep your products-organized in their nifty baskets or boxes- off the desk area. When we originally bought our house, I wanted to have built-in’s put in the bonus room/play room. But then when we moved in and I started decorating, I decided I didn’t want to make the room seem smaller (even though this is a huge room as it’s over our 3 car garage), so I came up with this shelf system. Since my ceiling is angled, I off-set and staggered my shelves. These are just simple white wooden shelves which we picked up from Home Depot or Lowes (unfinished), and added some decorative wood brackets to them. I painted them all white, and bought a bunch of baskets. This can work for you as well, in a home office situation, particularly where you are trying to get things off your desktop and make it less cluttered.

As to how you should hang your shelves, Be creative! Open up a catalog or magazine and rip out pages of how designers and other people have arranged wall shelves.

Mel also mentioned Cavallini file folders a while back, and lucky for you, I found them discounted at Art Supplies Online (at a really fabulous price, people so stock up!). I think we can all agree that anything preppy on sale is a very good thing, and that certainly include these lovely little folders. Don’t forget you can also check out the large preppy and colorful assortment of file folders at See Jane Work (check out the Caspari Weave and Caspari Stripe patterned folders in particular). By now you should all be very familiar with this site because you’ve read about it here on my blog, but also over at the Preppy Princess’ old place. Bottom line, it’s a great shop with creative catchy little products and organizational ideas. You can purchase their products which are fab, or easily recreate some of their looks much less inexpensively. For instance, you can always pick up less expensive but still colored file folders at your local office supply store, such as Office Max and customize them yourself. Pick up some pretty scrapbooking paper, cut it to size, and print up and label the front of your files with a pretty font.

Also, Pottery Barn is having some pretty good sales right now. For instance, you can check out the Franklin Craft Center or Wall Mounted Craft Organizer. See this Ribbon Organizer? Sadly, so it’s no longer available (although check the outlet if you have one near you), but this would be VERY simple to make. And what I would do is hang it on the wall in lieu of keeping it on the desk. A few of these hung on the wall over your workspace, interspersed with some nice looking shelves and baskets or decorative boxes holding your desktop clutter, will also serve to add color and focus to your wall. You know, you can also pick up some decorative wall mounted paper towel holders to mount to the wall to hold your ribbon. Go to your local home improvement store or home discount store (Tj Max, Marshalls, HomeGoods) and pick up some decorative iron holders. To switch things up and make it a little more eye appealing, why not pick up matching Toilet paper holders? Obviously shorter in width than a paper towel holder, this can also be put into the mix for different sizes. Other holders to consider for your ribbon? Well a bathroom towel rack would work just as well, provided the bar is narrow enough for the ribbon. Designed to hold paper towels, bracket-mounted wooden dowels hang inside one door, skewering colorful spools of ribbon, string, jute, and cording you just unroll and snip to length.

Hopefully this should give you some good ideas for your own home office or crafting space. I know this was something a few of you were interested in and it's difficult to know everyone's exact needs. But sitting down and making a list of what you need to organize will really help you pull it all together. Good luck!

Being Pushy

Okay so I admit it. Sometimes I can be a little bit pushy. Can’t we all? And while yes, I can be pushy as in making sure things get done, sometimes I need to be pushy in other ways. What am I talking about, you ask? Well, I know we’ve all got various forms of bulletin boards or message boards or even those cute little French ribbon numbers. But why not create (okay, or buy for those of you who mistakenly think you aren’t crafty) some snazzy decorative push pins? Talk about being pushy!

I know we’ve all seen some really cute pushpins around. And the great things about this little project is that you can literally use anything you want to create them. Buttons, mismatched earrings, Foreign coins, mini seashells that you can pick up at your craft store, marbles, or heck, if you fancy yourself the next Amelda Marcos, then run to Target and pick up some Barbie shoes!

You Will Need
-12 aluminum pushpins (or substitute clear plastic ones)
-12 small coordinating toppers
-Wire cutters or heavy-duty scissors
-Sand paper
-Glue (such as E6000)
-Small box
-Paint
-Plastic foam
-Decorative paper

Instructions
1. Select 12 small coordinating toppers that are slightly larger than the head of an aluminum pushpin. If aluminum pushpins are not available, use clear plastic ones.

2. For buttons, cut the shanks from the back using wire cutters or heavy-duty scissors. If needed, sand the back to make it perfectly smooth.

3. Glue the embellishments to the tops of the pushpins using industrial-strength glue such as E6000. Let the glue dry overnight or longer.

4. Paint or wrap a small box to match the pushpins. Add ribbons, strips of paper, or other decorations to the box tops. Cut a piece of plastic foam to fit snugly inside the box and glue it in place. Make sure it is shallow enough to accommodate the pushpins when the lid is in place.

5. Cover the top of the plastic foam with matching decorative paper and glue it in place. Stick the pushpins into the plastic foam.

These instructions came to my by way of BHG (a great resource if you can overlook the gazillion annoying pop-ups) and as you can see, they recommend decorating a pretty box and giving these pins as a little gift. And why not? These would make a great little gift for perhaps a teacher or a friend who is starting a new job. I love the idea of making a knot in some pretty grosgrain ribbon, and using that as a cute colorful topper for your pushpins. Just be creative and try a few different ideas to see what you like best.

Now, I know there are plenty of you out there who are under the false impression that you aren’t crafty. I promise you are craftier than you think! But if you don’t want to tackle this project but still want some cute little pushpins of your own, then you really must run over to Ballard Designs and check out their great selection. Over at See Jane Work, they’ve also got some cheeky little “Take a Number” pushpins that are also really cute. Still looking for more? Then I stumbled onto Jim Clift Designs and he’s got a nice selection of pewter pushpins that are definitely a must see.

So now I’m off. The mini monograms are at pre-school and I’ve got to hunt down my book club selection for this month, run and get my car detailed, drop off a couple things at my monogrammers, and take care of a few other things as well. Good luck with your pushpins and by all other accounts, try not to be too pushy today! ;-)

The Beast of the Fitted Sheet

Want to know how many loads of laundry I washed, dried, folded, hung, and put away yesterday? 5. That’s right, FIVE. Want to know how many I have left? Mmmmmmmm, I’m going to estimate and say 4. FOUR MORE. Calgon take me away!

So in honor of all my laundry, I thought I’d share with you a nifty little tutorial on how to fold that blasted fitted sheet. *Of course, lets not leave out the little fact that really my ife would be a lot easier if I still had someone doing this for me* Because if you’re anything like me, and since we’ve gotten to know each other a bit over the last 7 months I can say that you probably are, that stupid stupid sheet ends up in a messy odd looking shape with random creases and fabric poking out all over the place. And then what you do is try to tame it and flatten it by putting the folded flat sheet and pillow cases on top of it, right? Follow that up with a *convincing* "yeah, that looks good now!" Yeah well, if we can’t tame the beast of the fitted sheet we might as well learn how to fold it for real.

1. Stand holding the sheet by the two adjacent corners of one of the shorter edges (see photo, left). With the sheet inside out, place one hand in each of these two corners.

2. Bring your right hand to your left, and fold the corner in your right hand over the one in your left, enveloping it. Next, reach down and pick up the corner that is hanging in front; bring it up, and fold it over the two corners in your left hand; the corner that’s showing will be inside out.

3. Bring the last corner up, and fold it over the others; with its right side showing, it should envelop the other three corners.

4. Lay the folded sheet on a flat surface, and straighten it into the shape shown.

5. Fold the two edges in so all the elastic is hidden.

6. Fold the sheet into a rectangle.

7. Continue folding until the rectangle is the size you want it to be.

8. I added #8 myself. My mom takes the perfectly folded fitted sheet, flat sheet and 1 pillow case and perfectly stuffs them inside the remaining pillow case so her linen closet looks, well, probably a lot like Martha's to tell the truth!

Well, you know what they say... Practice makes perfect so I’m off to practice and perfect my fitted sheet folding skills by tackling my last 4 loads (until it all starts over again on Monday that is). Or maybe I'll bag it and just go shopping today....

Yep, that sounds a lot better to me!

Reader Requests: 07 Agendas & Calligraphy Markers

I know I haven't exactly been "wow-ing" you guys with any big projects or ideas lately. But I'm working on a big organization post for next week, and in the middle of working on a ribbon embellished dust ruffle and roman shade as well. You'll be hearing about those next week.

Today I've got a few reader requests to answer because I've been a little behind on that, but then later this afternoon I've got a really fun and exciting announcement to make for all of you celebrity gossip obsessed folks besides me out there! So make sure you check back!

Laura writes:
Besides saying hello, I was looking to see if you have any suggestions on where to find cute day planners/organizers. I picked up a black leather bound one a few years ago and it is definitely looking worse for wear, plus I would love to find a bright color. Any suggestions?

Well, Laura, Horchow has really beautiful crocodile embossed leather yearly planners, address books, and journals in all our favorite preppy colors that you can also personalize. Alyssa also pointed out that the Kate Spade “Debra Pocket” small sized planners are now on sale for $52 at See Jane Work. With colors like black with a chartreuse green inside or white with pink combo, how can you go wrong? Of course, the Mom Agenda is also a big hit which can also be picked up at See Jane Work.

Perhaps my favorite agenda’s are from Neiman’s. I love the pink and green, but you shouldn’t really be surprised at that, and what’s more is you can also have it personalized. Yippee!
And I think you know how I feel about Coach. In fact, you could probably find it inscribed on a tree inside a heart somewhere, so I also suggest you go take a look at what Coach has to offer in the way of preppy little planners. But after you check out the planners at Coach, head over to eLuxury (oooh La Laaaaaa) and perhaps a little Louis Vuitton number might catch your eye.

Oh! And don’t forget checking out the old classics like the updated Malibu collection from Daytimer which comes in some great colors and prices, as does Franklin Covey have some really fabulously stylish and colorful options as well. But, if you’re not looking for something you don't have to make a lifetime commitment too and just looking for something colorful and cute to get you through the year, then you must check out the Vera Bradley Agenda in Java blue (which I am seeing everywhere this season) or petal pink.

Nancy writes:
I have been searching all over the internet for some special pens. I am about to start addressing my wedding invitations (no calligraphy here though!)...and I am looking for a dark brown pen to address them in. (my colors are chocolate and sky blue) I live in a small town in Eastern NC and there are no craft shops for hours. I have a Sanford Calligraphy Marker in black that writes at the width that I like, but have had NO luck finding a brown one. I'm trying not to have to buy boxes of sets of pens, because I'd rather just buy a bunch of brown ones individually. Any suggestions on where to look online for something like this??

Actually, yes! Online, you will want to hit Marker Supply for sure and take a look at these. Praise the marker God’s they come in brown! But also check out a few online scrapbooking stores. I am not a scrapbooker myself but there are a million online stores just waiting out there when I goggled it.

Second of all, if you have a friend (or bridesmaid perhaps?) who happens to live near JoAnn’s, Hobby Lobby, or Michael’s, then I would see if they wouldn’t mind talking a stroll down the scrapbooking aisles. There are all sorts of scrapbooking pens and pens for photo archiving that are probably exactly what you are looking for, and I do know they come in brown.

Pack It Up

I’ve never really been a big collector. I mean, if you consider headbands and barrettes and fabric and ribbons and everything else I’ve ever bought but somehow can’t seem to part with (see # 80). But other than just general stuff I am emotionally attached too (which is pretty much anything, up to and including my grocery receipts for some reason), I really only collect one thing. Christopher Radko ornaments.

I started collecting them our first Christmas married. I don’t know why I felt the pressure to collect something, and being that I love Christmas and his ornaments are beyond gorgeous, that’s what I chose to go with. And I have not been sorry (has my bank account been sorry? Well, yes.) I can still remember purchasing my first Radko myself, at Neiman’s. I went for the classic wedding bells, to signify our first Christmas married, and I get nostalgic every time I look at that ornament. And don’t laugh, but I keep an inventory of them in an Excel spreadsheet by name and #. Current count has me right around 52. Yahoo! I said don’t laugh.

But I do realize so many of you probably collect other Holiday items as well, that you will need to pack away. Heck, even if it’s just ornaments from the tree, they’ve got to be packed up as well, right? Sister #1 has an obscene amount of Department 56 Snow Village that pretty much takes over their entire house during the Holidays. I mean, you know it’s bad when you have to take furniture out of the house and set up specially made shelves and tables and display units just to house this little holiday addiction. She may not be able to get drunk off of it, but trust me when I tell you it IS an addiction. But the bottom line is she really enjoys it, just as I enjoy my Radko. It is a lot of work though, don’t you think? Carefully opening and unwrapping the breakables, carefully setting them up then threatening everyone with their life if they even come close to touching them, and then having to carefully package everything back up again a few weeks later. This is probably why I chose not to display mine this year. My heart just wasn’t in it this year and I had too much on my plate.

So in my search for some crafty and clever new ideas for storing your ornaments and holiday collectibles, you’ll be happy to know I stumbled upon some great things. Of course, leave it to Martha, to come up with something so simple but yet sensible, that it makes you hit your head with that “duh, why didn’t I think of that” expression. Check out these pictures. By cutting a piece of corrugated cardboard to line the bottom of each storage bin and prevent slippage, she used her trusty hot glue gun to attach simple paper cups to the cardboard base. Wrap the ornaments in tissue paper and place them in the cups. Then all you have to do is stack cardboard-and-cup flats inside the container. You can also see for smaller ornaments, Martha uses egg cartons. Brilliant! But I guess that’s why she’s THE Martha, after all.

Now, if you don’t want to go to all the trouble Martha has laid out, and you fancy yourself more of the run into Target, pick up a load of plastic bins and be done with it type of person, then by all means, have at it. There are storage bins galore out there for you in all shapes, sizes and colors. Divided or un-divided for ornaments, the choice is yours. I like these from the Improvements Catalog, myself. But in terms of storing all other holiday items, then I recommend clear plastic storage bins. You can separate the items by color, location (hallway or dining room), type (lights, candles, garland, etc), then put a large piece of paper inside the tub, face OUT, with the description. That way, you don’t have to worry about the tape losing its stickiness and the label coming off, and it’s super easy for you to spot and know what’s inside each box.

I know I’m not the only one out there who over-bought wrapping paper either. It gets me every year without fail. I can’t help it and I blame my obsession with all things paper on my fascination with festive holiday paper as well. So you know I’m not going to throw my unused stash out. Throw the pretty paper away?! Well that would just be wrong! So you can pick up specific wrapping paper storage containers like this one from Target or Wal-Mart, or do what I do and group them together and secure them with heavy duty rubber bands. I then store them in a HUMONGOUS Toys R Us shopping bag that is also secured with a rubber band. It gets put up in the attic where it will wait until I summon for it next year. But another good idea I came across is to store your wrapping paper in hanging garment bags. If the garment bag has outside pockets, then use those for your gift tags, unused cards, and tissue paper. Pretty smart, right?

So you'd think all this typing and writing about storing my holiday things would have me all pumped up and motivated to start taking down my own decorations and get my party started, but nope. I'm throwing the mini monograms in the car and we are headed out for a bit. I need to hit the grocery store, Mr. Monograms office to get my purse out of his car (which will obviously be our first stop before the grocery), and if the mini's can keep from arguing and fussing long enough, we might even stop at the park before heading home for naps this afternoon. I'm still recovering from the cold from hell, so I see a nap in my future this afternoon as well. So I guess we need to start packing it up in the car now so I'm off.
